Adriano Panatta slams the American World No.19 Frances Tiafoe for disrespecting the National Anthem. The former French Open champion was the commentator in charge during the Davis Cup match between Italy and the USA where the incident happened. Panatta didn’t hesitate to shoot fire at the American as he said he would be kicking the player’s b*tt if he were his captain for the rude behavior.
As quoted by him, “He is rude. If I were his captain, I would kick him in the b*tt“. Frances Tiafoe eventually lost the singles match against Lorenzo Sonego 3-6,6-7(7-9). As expected, The behavior is not welcomed well by the tennis fanatics all around.
Tiafoe was defeated by a serving master class of the Italians as he had no answers for 17 aces. The American had his chances in the second set but failed to convert 3 set points. Frances Tiafoe’s loss in the starting game of the tie had kept the Americans in the backfoot and Italy went on to win the tie 2-1.
Italy awaits Canada in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup
Frances Tiafoe‘s loss against Lorenzo Sonego was neutralized by Taylor Fritz‘s singles victory over Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(10-8),6-3 to make the tie 1-1. The decider hence turned out to be the doubles between the Italian Pair Fabio Fognini – Simone Bolelli and the American pair Jack Sock and Tommy Paul. As the American Pair failed to break at least once in the match, The Italian veterans won the match with ease (6-4,6-4)
Italy will face Canada in the semi-finals. Canada went on to beat Germany 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Australia will play Croatia in the other semi-finals. They defeated Netherlands and Spain respectively in the quarter-final matches. The tournament is played from November 22 to November 27 in Malaga, Spain. This year, the surface is hard, and played in indoor conditions.
The United States of America is the most successful team in Davis cup history with 32 wins. Second is Australia which dominated the tournament in the 1950s and 1960s with 15 wins in 18 years. Their overall tally is 28 wins. France and Great Britain share the third spot with 10 wins. The latest 2021 edition was won by Russia. 5-time champion Rafael Nadal is the most successful among active players in the tournament which is also known as the world cup of tennis.
