Australian tennis player Ajla Tomljanovic who missed out on the majority of action in the 2023 season due to a knee injury is excited to make a comeback at the 2024 Australian Open– her home slam. The 30-year-old who defeated Serena Williams at the 2022 US Open to end the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s campaign is set to kick off her 2024 season with the same tournament where it all went haywire last year- the United Cup.
Tomljanovic had a terrible start to the 2022-23 United Cup as she was forced to withdraw from the tournament over injury concerns in her knee. The 30-year-old then went on to miss the entire first half of the 2023 season including the first three of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
However, she made a comeback at the 2023 US Open but only to get knocked out in the second round as she gave Elena Rybakina a walkover. Two weeks later, she returned to action with the Guadalajara Open but had a first-round exit. Nevertheless, Tomljanovic gained some confidence as she won the title in Brazil in the WTA 125 event. Now, as she returns to action with the United Cup once again, the Australian hopes for a change in fortunes.
I feel like I’ve had a few heartbreaking moments in my career here [Australia], but it’s always the one I look forward to come back to the most. It’s the best feeling, being back here. Memories from last year aren’t so fun, so to come back here and actually be able to experience center court and hitting, it feels so good.Ajla Tomljanovic said to Syndey Morning Herald.
Ajla Tomjlanovic hopes to turn around her bad juju in Australia
Talking further about her failed attempts to succeed in Australia, Ajla Tomjlanovic hoped to break the bad juju this time around. The Croatia-born tennis ace said that she had a lot of time to introspect and it helped her regain the self-confidence required to compete at the highest level.
Tomjlanovic also talked about the self-doubts she had after a series of failures. The Australian said that she started questioning her abilities and lost hope of making a comeback. But then she remembered her performances from 2022 and the self-belief came back. Tomjlanovic then said that she is hungrier than ever to do well at the highest level. She claims to be feeling good.
The fact that I am back to feeling pretty good, and there’s still a lot to improve on, especially my movement and things, but at the same time I feel like I can play a high level with what I’ve got, which gets me excited. Hopefully, that perspective can maybe help me turn around my bad juju from my Aussie summers these past few years.Ajla Tomjlanovic said about her comeback.
Ajla Tomjlanovic has been included in Team Australia, which consists of Storm Hunter, Ellen Perez, Alex de Minaur, John Millman, and Matthew Ebden and they will be competing in Perth.
