Carlos Alcaraz has been turning heads with great performances this year, capturing trophies in Rio, Miami, and Barcelona. On his way to the triumph in Barcelona, he defeated the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur, and Pablo Carreno Busta. Following that, Alcaraz broke into the top ten of the ATP rankings. Many well-known people have praised the young Spaniard and Novak Djokovic is one of them.

Novak Djokovic, the world number one, spoke to the Madrid Masters 1000‘s official media and lauded Carlos Alcaraz. In this sense, he described what the Spaniard has accomplished in recent months as “incredible,” adding that the influence has been so significant, according to the Serbian, that it has transcended Spanish borders.

Djokovic stated, “What I like most about him is that he is very respectful, has very positive values and is a great person.” The conversation took place following their joint training session in the run-up to their debut at the Madrid Open. “For my son, Alcaraz is the new number 1, not Nadal. He changed favourite players,” the Serbian continued to say. All of this occurred during a laid-back interview in which he was even encouraged to talk in Spanish.

Regarding the media focus surrounding Alcaraz, Djokovic predicted that “it may be difficult for him to cope with the media attention” in the coming weeks. In any case, he praised his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and promised to assist him in finding the right balance. Beyond the Serb’s words, the truth is that the compliments were reciprocated. Previously, the Spaniard claimed that Novak Djokovic gave him a “beating” during their joint training session. The first official meeting between the two could take place at the Masters 1000 in Madrid (in the semifinals). Of course, both will have a long way to get to that point.
