19-year-old Coco Gauff created history on Saturday as she came back from a set down to become the first American teenager to win the country’s major tennis tournament since Serena Williams in 1999. The 6th seed defeated the newly crowned No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to clinch her first Grand Slam title. With the win, she also became the first American to win a US Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017.
Before the tournament, many touted the teen as one of the favorites for the US Open title. She headed into the US Open on the back of a successful North American hard-court swing. Gauff won the Washington Open last month, beating Maria Sakkari in the final. It was her first WTA 500 singles title. The American followed it up with her first WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Masters. Now, the American has followed it up with her biggest title to date, the US Open 2023.
Eurosport tennis expert Alex Corretja was full of praise for her as he claimed that Gauff could bring a lot to the game of tennis. Appreciating the temperament of the American teen, Corretja said,“I like the way she behaves on the court and off the court. She’s a great role model.” Indicative of her mental strength, Gauff managed to keep her nerves after she was broken at 4-1 up in the final set after Sabalenka took a medical time-out.
“I don’t know if she’s aware of how important she is for the sport, for tennis itself. I think she’s young, she’s enjoying her rise. She’s well-mannered, well-educated and she can bring so much to this sport. And not just to sport but to life in general. I think we should look at Coco Gauff as an example,” Corretja added.

Coco Gauff takes a shot on ‘Tennis Twitter’ after historic final victory

“People don’t think I see it but I see it. I’m very aware of tennis Twitter. I know y’all’s usernames, so I know who’s talking trash and I can’t wait to look on Twitter right now!” Gauff said, taking an apparent dig on social media fans in the post-match press conference. Gauff isn’t the only player to take a shot on the tennis twitter community.
Earlier in the tournament, the 5th seed Casper Ruud called out the ‘experts’ of social media. “So I read a bunch of these, like, so-called tennis experts and their opinions, and it’s just wild. It annoys me in a way, because it’s just — I feel like if you haven’t played professional in the past, most of them have no clue what they are talking about,” Ruud said. Ruud further called out the short-term memory and recency bias of some fans on social media. The Norwegian said that he found the exaggeration on social media interesting but not worthy of engaging in.
Gauff would’ve enjoyed her time on twitter on Saturday though as she received widespread acknowledgement for her stunning achievement. “Congrats to U.S. Open Champion @CocoGauff. You electrified Arthur Ashe stadium and the entire nation – the first of more to come and proof that anything is possible if you never give up and always believe. You’ve made America so proud.” Shared US President Joe Biden on ‘X’.
