Former Spanish professional tennis player Alex Corretja established that he had his reservations when it came to Iga Swiatek dictating the US Open draw. He said that it would not be a cakewalk for the Pole to defend her crown.
“And she can’t just go and win every tournament. That’s almost impossible,” said the Spaniard. He has substantiated that, though Swiatek has shown that she is playing her best tennis, it is entirely impossible for her to win every tournament and dominate the tennis world.
However, the Spaniard also said, “I don’t know if she is the top favorite. But it might be much closer than last year, probably when we saw the way she was dictating,” revealing that she would be a top favorite win the tournament. However, more interestingly, when compared to her stellar performance at the US Open 2022, it would be impossible for her to dominate at such a high level.
The Pole has a total of four titles and two runner-ups in the 2023 season alone. She has won the Roland Garros 2023 in a riveting final against Karolina Muchova. She is currently WTA World No. 1 and has her eyes set on the US Open in 2023 as the defending champion.
Alex Corretja speaks on the chances of Iga Swiatek clinching the US Open 2023 title.
Alex Corretja claims Iga Swiatek is not playing at the level she did in the dominant 2022 season. “The other players are also improving, and she’s also learning how to play with different situations,” said the Spaniard as he established that the road would not be cut out for the Pole this year.
Swiatek was well ahead of the crowd in the 2022 season with eight WTA titles. She had won four WTA 1000 titles and two Grand Slams at Roland Garros and the US Open. However, Corretja claims that it will not be as straightforward this year.
He also said Swiatek would still be a top favorite to hold the cup again. “I think she will have an extremely good US Open, and if someone wants to beat her, they need to play very well because she knows how to defend,” he said.
