Alexander Zverev faced a tiring loss at the hands of Russian powerhouse Daniil Medvedev. After defeating the indomitable Carlos Alcaraz, it was believed that the German might be the new 2024 Australian Open champion. But his run was unfortunately stopped by the Russian.
Zverev started off pretty well, winning the first two sets. But Medvedev constantly placed himself behind the baseline and started countering the German’s strong serves and rallies. Zverev kept trying with his dominating backhand volleys. He even received a roaring applause after winning a 51-shot rally.
In his interview, when asked about his loss, Zverev revealed that he has been feeling unwell ever since his match with Alcaraz. He shared how after the second set he started to lose energy. He was not the same player as he was during the first two sets. He said:
I lost because of my physical condition, not because of my tennis.Alexander Zverev said
He was also asked if his ongoing criminal trial distracted him at any time during the match. To this, the German had a very blunt reply. He said that anyone with a semi-decent IQ could see what was going in. It should be noted that he has been undergoing legal trial for alleged domestic violence.

During the on-court action, emotions between the two players rose, as evidenced by a tense moment during the fourth set when Medvedev demanded a replay of a disputed point. Zverev’s careless shrug added to the heat of their battle.
The publication of Netflix’s series “Break Point” heightened the excitement by shedding light on the acrimonious relationship between the Russian and the German, depicting Zverev in a controversial light. The depiction of their Monte Carlo match in the series, along with a no-look handshake at the end, heightened the hatred between the two opponents.
