Alexander Zverev has some strong words for the media in the ongoing US Open. He established that he was discontent with the media’s predisposition. The German voiced out that it would be disrespectful to assume a Novak DjokovicCarlos Alcaraz final at Flushing Meadows. The fuming rivalry between Alcaraz and Djokovic has always been an interest to the media’s fodder. While both players might have had their fair share of meetings at final matches, the German thinks it disrespectful to other players to assume a definite final between the two.

“I find it logical that the media look for stories related to them, rivalries are very appreciated. However, I think it is disrespectful to others to assume that they are predestined to play in the final,” said Zverev during his passage in the post-match press conference. While the current World No.12 understands the hype surrounding the rivalry, he also finds it a blatant disrespect. He argues that the type of hype created by popular media flagrantly dismisses the talent and hard work of the rest of the players on the tour.

Zverev shares this sentiment with World No.1 Novak Djokovic, who also made this same point early on in the tournament. While the German put forward his thoughts on the rivalry, he also spoke on his current condition. “For the moment, I am 12th in the world and I don’t think I have all the cards in hand to be their main opponent,” he said. Zverev’s best finish at a Major was at the 2020 US Open, where he played the final against Dominic Thiem. He even won the ATP finals twice. However, an unfortunate ankle injury in a semi-final match against Rafael Nadal in the Roland Garros 2022 put an end to his promising season. However, he has been on the mend and has made his comeback to the tour at the 2023 Australian Open.
