German tennis ace Alexander Zverev‘s relationship with Russian ace Daniil Medvedev has turned sour ever since the release of the second season of Netflix’s Break Point.
As the episode featuring Zverev portrays Medvedev as the ‘villain’, neither the Russian nor the fans are liking it. To make things worse, Zverev is constantly taking jabs at the Russian tennis ace.
The German’s karma jibe at Medvedev after his first-round exit at the 2023 French Open is one such example. As Daniil Medvedev was knocked out of Roland Garros 2023 after a defeat against Thiago Seybtoh Wild in the first round, Zverev claimed that it was bad karma that hit Medvedev.
The German, while talking about why it is good to not face Medvedev in the early stages of a tournament, indirectly celebrated Medvedev’s early exit. The 25-year-old said that he believes in karma and that it comes back to bite those who wish bad for someone else.
Medvedev is one of the best players in the world, so it helps not playing him at an early stage. But at the same time, I do believe in karma. I do believe that if you wish bad upon someone, then the bad is going to come back to you.Alexander Zverev said. (H/T: Tennis Infinity)
Daniil Medvedev feels he can’t be friends with Alexander Zverev
The verbal spat is not one-way. While Alexander Zverev is taking jibes at Daniil Medvedev, the Russian also knows how to give it back.
Although not directly, Daniil Medvedev did reply to Zverev, saying they could not be friends. Medvedev said that it is not possible to be friends with someone who he plays against so often.
The former World No. 1 also compared their achievements. Medvedev said that although Zverev has an Olympic gold medal, he feels he is ahead of the German, having won a Grand Slam title.
I don't think I played against anyone more than Sascha but we can't be like best friends. It's impossible. Too much competition. He has Olympic Games. I have Grand Slam. I do think Grand Slam is a bigger title even if Olympic games are amazing.Daniil Medvedev says in an episode of Break Point.
It is worth mentioning that Zverev won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. However, the German has yet to lay hands on a Grand Slam title.
On the other hand, Medvedev has a US Open title to his credit, which he won after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final.
Also, Daniil Medvedev leads the head-to-head record between the two players. The Russian leads Zverev 11-7. In 2023 alone, Medvedev and Zverev played against each other six times. In those six matches, Medvedev emerged victorious in five instances.
