A few months before Alexander Zverev’s domestic trial hearing began, the German celebrated Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla. The two-time French Open semifinalist posted a picture on social media where he and his girlfriend were seen taking a mirror selfie.
For the uninitiated, Alexander Zverev has been in the spotlight since November after a Berlin court ordered him to pay a €450,000 fine to former girlfriend Olga Sharypova for domestic violence offenses.
However, German law allows for acceptance or denial of such a court order. As expected, Zverev denied the order, which will now see a public trial begin in May.
However, despite such serious allegations, all seems to be going well between the German and his girlfriend, Sophia. They seem less concerned about the divided public view about the case, as Sophia appeared a few times to watch Zverev reach the semifinals of the Australian Open.
Zverev shared a picture of the couple on his Instagram story, in which the tennis star was seen donning a classic red suit and Sophia in a mesh black midi dress.
Happy Valentine's Day Sophia Thomalla. The Instagram story was captioned as
That’s not all; last week, Laver Cup announced that Alexander Zverev would be part of Team Europe, neglecting the allegations. The German is set to feature at the Los Cabos Open as the top seed.
Alexander Zverev’s domestic abuse allegation
Alexander Zverev was accused of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend, Olga Sharypova, in October 2020. The German immediately denied the allegations on Instagram, stating they were simply not true.
Sharypova was granted two interviews with journalist Ben Rothenberg. The first interview published in November 2020 revealed how the tennis player punched her in the face and covered her face with a pillow while she struggled to breathe.
That led the ATP, the men’s governing tennis body, to announce an investigation into those allegations in October 2021. Zverev denied all the allegations. However, the ATP investigation lasted for 15 months, and on January 20, 2023, it was announced that there would be no sanction on the Germans because of insufficient evidence.
Last year, there were fresh claims of domestic violence by a former partner, Brenda Patea. She revealed during an interview with a German newspaper that Zverev pushed her into a wall and choked her in May 2020. A court in Berlin then ordered Zverev to pay a €450,000 penalty for his offenses.
Zverev denied the charges yet again and objected to the penalty order, which under German law means a public trial will take place in May.
