Alexander Zverev had a disappointing loss at the 2023 BMW Open tournament held in Munich on April 20. He was defeated by Christopher O’Connell in a two-set match that lasted for almost two hours, with a score of 7-6(2), 6-4. This led to an early elimination for Zverev from the tournament, while O’Connell secured his spot in the quarterfinals, where he will face Flavio Cobolli, who won against Oscar Otte with a score of 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.

Zverev had won the Munich tournament twice before, in 2017 and 2018, but he faced another setback on home turf for the second year in a row. In 2022, he was eliminated in the opening round by eventual champion Holger Rune, with a score of 6-3, 6-2. After his most recent loss against O’Connell, Zverev shared his difficulties in managing the pressure of playing in his native country.

He said “I was nervous, I don’t play with as much pressure, I play more slowly, I move more slowly – it’s a combination of things. It was cold, and I find it difficult to manage the pressure

Zverev revealed in a recent interview that feeling nervous before a match negatively impacts his performance. He explained that this often triggers a chain reaction of negative outcomes, ultimately leading to him not being able to perform at his best. Additionally, he stressed that the pressure to succeed is entirely self-imposed and originates from within himself, rather than being imposed by external factors.

On his 26th birthday, Alexander Zverev responded to criticism from tennis fans who were mocking him for suggesting that he could have beaten Rafael Nadal in the French Open semifinals of 2022 if he had not been hampered by an ankle injury. The German player has since blamed the media for twisting his words and fabricating a story just to generate more clicks and views.

Last year in Paris, the tennis match between the two players was unique because even after three hours of play, the second set had not been finished. Rafael Nadal saved four set points in the first set and was winning 7-6(8), 6-6 when Alexander Zverev rolled his ankle and had to be taken off the court in a wheelchair.

In a recent interview with Sky Sport, Alexander Zverev, who is currently ranked 16th in the world, cleared up the confusion surrounding his previous statement about his match against Rafael Nadal in the French Open 2022 semifinals. Zverev explained that he never claimed he would have defeated the 22-time Grand Slam champion and that his words were misinterpreted by the media.

“I would never have said in my life that I was the favorite against Nadal in Paris, I simply commented that I was looking competitive and we were having a great game,” Zverev said.
