World No.9 Alexander Zverev‘s stay in Paris was cut short as he was defeated in the round of 16 of the Paris Masters by 7th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday at the Accor Arena. The Greek pro defeated the 10th seed 7-6(2), 6-4 in one hour and 59 minutes to book his spot in the ATP Finals for 5th consecutive time. With the win, first against top-10 since ATP Finals last year, improved his head-to-head against Zverev to 9-4.

While Tsitsipas’ imperious stroke play had a role in knocking out the German, the 26-year-old might also have been distracted by turbulence in his personal life. The German no.1 has been charged $475,000 by the Berlin district court for physically injuring his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, Brenda Patea. Zverev rejected the charges and has filed an objection to the order.

The 2021 Olympic gold medal winner declined to further comment on the issue due to the ongoing court procedure.

Under German law, a penalty order is a preliminary order to ease the workload of the court system. This allows the court to issue summary punishments without holding a full hearing. If the defendant raises no objection, the punishment is finalized.

Responding to the order, the spokesperson of ATP said,

We are aware of the allegations against Alexander Zverev and the recent court order in Germany. As legal proceedings are still ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment at this stage.
