The air on Thursday was thick with anticipation at the ongoing Cincinnati Open as Alexander Zverev stepped onto the court to face the Third seed, Daniil Medvedev. In a thrilling face-off that lasted 2 hours and 34 minutes (154 minutes), the German managed to keep Medvedev on his toes all throughout the three sets.

Though the weather was a bit off during their clash on the court, World No. 16, Zverev, kept his head in the game and remained consistent with his performance. The 26-year-old did not lose this opportunity to break free of his losing streak over their past four clashes. He managed to avenge his previous defeat in Rome against his Russian opponent. At their match on Thursday, Zverev beat Medvedev 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 and managed to reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 Cincinnati Open.

In an interview with Tennis Channel after his win over Medvedev, Zverev said, “I think it was important, especially after last week when in Toronto I probably had a very bad week“. Alexander Zverev lost in the second round to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Canadian Open. “I probably had one of the worst weeks since I’m kind of pain-free. So I need to come out. I need to show myself that I can play well and that I can compete again. And yeah, I’m doing that, and I’m happy with that,” he stated further.

The two are arch-rivals, with the latest clash at Cincinnati marking their 16th face-off on court. Zverev is in great form this year and has given some of his best performances. The German will next face Frenchman Adrian Mannarino this week in the next round of the Cincinnati Masters.

Will Alexander Zverev regain his footing?

Alexander Zverev, who was seeded third last year in 2022 and is currently World No. 16, has been trying to regain his footing in the game after he suffered an ankle injury last year at the French Open, pitted against none other than Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals. While a close and thrilling encounter ensued, Zverev injured his ankle, fell to the ground in the middle of the second set, and had to retire from the match later.

This year, though the German lost to Matteo Berrettini in straight sets in the third round of Wimbledon, he managed to reach the semi-finals of Roland-Garros once again, defeating Argentinian Tomas Martin 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals. The semi-finals saw him lose to Casper Rudd in straight sets of 6-3, 6-4, and 6-0.

Though the chances of re-emerging as the second seed seem bleak, especially looking at the younger players like Carlos Alcaraz who have emerged in the tennis world, Zverev can still make his way up the ATP Rankings, like he did when he went from being ranked 22nd a few months ago to being the 16th seed. If Zverev keeps up with his good performance, he can definitely make it to being one of the Top Ten ranked players, and maybe he could even be one of the Top Five!
