Alexander Zverev just suffered an unexpected loss in the first round of the ongoing 2024 Mexico Open against his compatriot Daniel Altmaier. The German recently also suffered a loss against Jordan Thompson in the semifinal of the Los Cabos Open. Hence, this sudden drop in form is indeed worrying for his fans.

Daniel Altmaier got a strong footing in the match from the very beginning and won the first set with ease. The German surely did make a comeback in the second set but could not keep up the momentum and ultimately lost the match 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.

Zverev’s performance in the Australian Open was really good, and it further raises questions about his current form. He cruised past Cameron Norrie and Carlos Alcaraz effortlessly to play against Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal of the Australian major. There, he won the first two sets, but then the Russian pulled off a sensational comeback and registered a solid victory from there. Perhaps that defeat unnerved Alexander Zverev to some extent.

He was clearly not happy with his result against Altmaier, though, as he gave his compatriot a ‘cold’ handshake after the loss. This has been pointed out by some fans on social media and they are not particularly happy with the way Zverev behaved after his loss, considering it was one of the biggest victories of Altmaier’s career.

Considering these things, the least he could’ve done was offer him a hearty handshake, according to many fans on X. Check out some of the reactions below:

Altmaier will now play against Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round and look to get a solid finish in this tournament. Alexander Zverev, on the other hand, will have to work on himself ahead of the upcoming Indian Wells.
