The German International, Alexander Zverev, has raised questions over the umpire’s decision in his third-round clash against Italian Matteo Berrettini. The match between the two tennis professionals continued in the dark for a long time. However, despite the darkness, play was not suspended until the rain arrived, which affected the performance of both players.

Although the court was slippery after the rain delay, it got better with time. Both players suggested the umpire to suspend the play. However, their suggestions were not considered as the play continued until 8:30 local time.

In a post-match press conference, Zverev said, “Well, I think both of us played much better after the break because it was ridiculously dark before the rain delay. We both were saying that to the umpire, but their plan wasn’t to play us till 8:30. I don’t know how they wanted to play us more than one hour still.”

Wimbledon 2023 has largely been affected by rain interruptions, which have played a major role in the outcomes of the match. As a result, many matches have been suspended, and the schedule has undergone a lot of changes. Hence, to not disrupt the scheduling, the umpires might have continued the match as much as possible without considering its impact on the players.

Wimbledon 2023 has been one of the most difficult Wimbledon for tennis fans to enjoy. All the days of Wimbledon have had rain delays and suspensions of matches. The matches of the next round were being played on the court with roofs. Furthermore, matches for the current round were continuously postponed amidst rain delays.

The third day of the event had a target of 87 matches to be completed, and the first match to be completed on the same day was a second-round match with about 60 first-round games remaining. The rain delay is something that cannot be controlled, but the schedules could have been better after the rain delays started suspending the games.

Different players had to play for many consecutive days with no break in between the two games. Matteo Berrettini has played on all the days of the event, with his first break being on the seventh day. With that being said, the scheduling has had a lot of impact on this year’s Wimbledon, causing a lot of turnarounds in the matches.
