The German former World No. 2 had a rocky start against Jiri Lehecka in the Dubai Tennis Championship. After losing the first set he was facing the danger of his second straight-set loss in the hands of the Czech. Eventually, Zverev found a way to overcome Lehecka to secure a place in the second round.

“I first played Jiri back in Sydney and I had absolutely no chance in that match. I am happy that I have progressed and I have improved since then. He is playing amazing tennis,” Zverev said after the match.

“He made it to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and beat incredible players last week. He could have won the tournament, and lost to Andy with match points like so many did this year. I think he’s an incredible young player,” Zverev further added. In the second round, Zverev will face Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori or Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell.
