Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal
Alexander Zverev’s dream to win his maiden grand slam title at Roland Garros was crushed in the semifinals after he twisted his rally in the second set against eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Despite losing the first set, Zverev matched Nadal in every aspect and was truly in the match until his ankle twisted and he collapsed to the ground in tears.
He couldn’t stop his tears and screams due to the immense pain and wasn’t even able to stand up without support. He was taken inside for checkups on a wheelchair and then after a few minutes, he emerged on Court Phillipe Chatrier in crutches to congratulate Nadal for reaching the final. He was then received by huge applause and a standing ovation.
Later, Zverev revealed that he has possibly torn a few ligaments in his ankle and his injury was ‘very serious’. He flew back home and as of now, treatment has started on his right foot.
According to Le Quipe, Zverev will be out of action for at least 6-8 weeks. It will take about 4 weeks for his injury to heal completely and a few more weeks will be required to strengthen his ankle.

Due to this injury, Zverev will miss the entire grass-court season including Wimbledon 2022. For the first time ever, Zverev will be ranked No.2 in the world before a grand slam and to his dismay, he won’t be able to compete in it. The German will recover during the next 4 weeks and is expected to be back training during the American hard-court season.
He will most likely return on the tour at the Canada Masters or the Cincinnati Masters. His next goal will be to get perfectly fit and in form for the all-important US Open that will commence on August 29.
