Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev‘s incredible French Open campaign came to a shocking end in the semifinals against Rafael Nadal when he twisted his ankle and fell on the court during the second set. Zverev cried out in pain and after further examination, retired from the match limping out on crutches.

A day later, it was deduced that Zverev had multiple ligament tears in his ankle and for a quick recovery, he underwent surgery which ruled him out for multiple weeks. This also clashed with the time when Zverev achieved a career-high ranking of No.2. Sascha is still the World No.2 but hasn’t played a single match during this time.

Zverev missed Wimbledon due to his injury- where he could’ve been the No.1 seed in Medvedev’s absence and was estimated to return before the US Open. But according to sources, Zverev’s recovery may take a bit longer and he will most likely miss the US Open.

According to some of Reuters’ sources, Zverev is recovering well and is still hopeful for the US Open, but things are in a grey area as of now and nothing could be estimated.

“Sascha is recovering well and is still hoping that he can be ready for the U.S. Open. However, it is still too early to tell if he will be able to compete there or not,” a source told Reuters.

If not the US Open, Zverev will return to the tour before the ATP 500 event in Tokyo and will most likely target the Davis Cup. The Davis Cup finals this year are in Hamburg, Germany so it will be ideal for him to return in front of his home crowd.

“Davis Cup in Hamburg in September seems more realistic but we keep our fingers crossed that he will be ready earlier,” the spokesperson said in an email. Therefore, he should be able to play a few events before Tokyo,” Reuters reported
