Alexander Zverev showed his massive integrity by defeating world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal clash at the 2024 Australian Open. Zverev, seeded sixth, had a lead with a break in the third set and, despite a missed opportunity to serve it out initially, he remained composed and secured a 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-4 triumph on the second attempt.
After his match, Zverev was on-court with Jim Courier when a halting incident took place. Answering questions related to the match, Zverev was stopped mid-way when a pro-Palestine supporter yelled, cutting off the German, “Free Free Palestine.” As soon as his voice roared throughout the court, the crowd erupted in a collective ‘boo’, shutting the protestor down.
This is not the first time this has happened. Just two days ago, during Zverev’s match again, a pro-Palestine supporter stormed through the court and threw flyers onto the court. The match was briefly halted due to this anti-war demonstration. The flyers contained powerful messages like, “While you are watching tennis, bombs are dropping in Gaza” and “Free Palestine.” The ball kids later on were seen picking up and cleaning the flyers.
Alexander Zverev’s resounding victory over Carlos Alcaraz
In a dramatic change of events, Zverev upset the second-ranked player, Carlos Alcaraz, in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Australian Open, ending the young Spaniard’s hopes of winning his third Grand Slam title.
The German played nearly faultless tennis in the opening two sets, with a first-serve accuracy of more than 85% and dominance in baseline rallies and net exchanges. Alcaraz made a stunning comeback in the third set, winning a tie-break from an unlikely position and creating tremors that the match would go to a fifth set. However, the Spaniard’s chances darkened when he stumbled at 4-4 in the fourth set, giving Zverev a critical break, which the German used to secure the victory with his solid serve.
The match reached a stalemate in the fourth set, with both players vying for the victory. Notably, despite holding a 30-15 lead, Zverev was seen hobbling. Throughout the match, Zverev’s backhand was a dominant force, presenting regular challenges to the young Spaniard. Despite a number of problems surrounding Zverev, ranging from personal to professional, this victory over a formidable opponent may help to restore the German’s shattered reputation.
