German tennis ace Alexander Zverev found himself muddled in a controversy as a Berlin court issued a penalty order against him on 2 October for physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea. The World No.9 was also fined a total of £392,000 (€450,000). Now, almost a month after the verdict, Zverev’s lawyers have released a statement refuting the claims and calling the procedure scandalous.

The German ace’s lawyers have said that he will take action against the verdict using all means possible. Zverev’s lawyers claimed that the verdict was given on the basis of the allegations made by the complainant which has already been refuted by a forensic medical report.

The procedure is scandalous, there can be no question of a fair, constitutional procedure. Mr Zverev will take action against this using all means possible. Mr Zverev rejects the accusation made against him. The allegations made by the complainant which alone form the basis for the penalty order, have already been refuted by a forensic medical report.

Earlier, in July, Alexander Zverev had also denied all the allegations saying his lawyer will look into the matter.

Alexander Zverev not new to such allegations

This is not the first time Alexander Zverev has been accused of physically assaulting his partner. Back in 2021, Zverev’s former girlfriend Olya Sharapova had also accused the World No.9 of physically abusing her. The ATP had commissioned an investigation into the matter but found “insufficient evidence” to substantiate separate claims of domestic abuse against Zverev.

Then in July, Zverev was accused of domestic abuse for the second time but by a different person. His second girlfriend and mother of their child, Mayla alleged that Zverev physically assaulted her following an argument in Berlin. The district court then issued a penalty order and fined Zverev. However, the tennis ace was not content with the decision and hence has challenged it.

With Zverev contesting the order, the case will likely go to trial at the Tiergarten district court in Berlin after the court has heard further from the parties involved, according to the statement.

Talking about Alexander Zverev’s on-field show, the German is currently competing at the Paris Masters. The World No.9 beat Marton Fucsovics in the opening round and will face Ugo Humbert in the second round. Zverev is also in contention to play the ATP Finals in Turin where he is a two-time champion.
