In a shocking display of action, Alexander Zverev thrashed World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal match of the 2024 Australian Open. In a match that will be remembered for a long time, the German destroyed the young Spaniard’s dream of winning a third Grand Slam title.
Zverev delivered practically faultless tennis in the first two sets. His first-serve accuracy exceeded 90%, and he dominated baseline rallies and net play.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, produced a tremendous comeback in the third set, winning a tie-break in an unlikely situation, fueling speculation of a possible fifth set.
Unfortunately, Alcaraz suffered a setback with a substandard performance at 4-4 in the fourth set, giving Zverev a break, which he capitalized on and sealed the match with his dependable serve.
During the fourth set, the match was in a neutral position, with both players fighting to secure a win. Zverev was seen limping while taking a 30–15 lead. The German’s backhand throughout the match was very dominant, and the young Spaniard struggled through and through facing those.
Being surrounded by multiple controversies, ranging from personal to professional, Zverev’s image was certainly tarnished. But by defeating a player who cannot be defeated easily, the German might indeed succeed in clearing his reputation.
Social media is filled with applaud for Zverev
The moment Zverev won the match, social media turned upside down. To be honest, tennis fans did not consider Zverev to be a formidable force, as the German skipped most of the last season due to injury.
But being able to defeat the two-time Grand Slam title champion, he has been devoured with all the accolades. Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
As Zverev soars through the semis, he will next be facing Russian powerhouse Daniil Medvedev.
