Simona Halep was provisionally suspended in October 2022 following a positive drug test at the US Open. Following repeated delays, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) issued a statement on Tuesday, September 12, announcing Halep’s four-year doping penalty. Halep, on the other hand, has maintained her innocence throughout the episode.

Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, was defeated by the Romanian in the Wimbledon Finals in 2019 by a score of 6-2, 6-2. By doing so, the former World No.1 was denied her 8th Wimbledon title.

Williams feels she should be granted her Wimbledon title, which she lost in 2019 to her 31-year-old opponent. Another Grand Slam championship will bring Serena’s total Slam tally to 24, matching Margaret Court and, most recently, Novak Djokovic. However, no official evidence has been discovered to show that Halep was doped during the 2019 Wimbledon.

Soon after the news emerged, Alexis Ohanian tweeted something that seemed to be aimed at Halep. Ohanian posted a photo of himself wearing a D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) tshirt during Williams’ first-round match against Maria Sharapova at the 2019 US Open.

The 41-year-old tennis veteran commented on the tweet by taking a jibe at Halep. She wrote, “Seriously not out of style.”

Ohanian shared a photo of himself during Williams’ 2019 US Open first-round play versus Maria Sharapova. The photo, taken shortly after Williams’ victory over Maria Sharapova, revealed Alexis Ohanian wearing a D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) t-shirt that he had previously hidden under his buttoned jacket.

It is worth remembering that Sharapova tested positive for a prohibited drug in 2016 and received a 15-month sentence.

“Some fashion is timeless,” Ohanian wrote in his latest post with the T-shirt, seemingly taunting Halep. The ban was imposed on both tennis players after they were found guilty of doping; the word “fashion” was used to characterize the actions.

While some fans believe the digs at Halep are snarky, the American star has endured her own share of discrimination due to doping tests. The star has been outspoken about her treatment in comparison with the other players. Williams criticized the authorities in 2018 after being required to produce drug samples five times in a year.
