Alexis Ohanian lauds Andy Murray for his feminist views in protecting the legacy of Serena Williams as the Reddit co-founder advocates women equality in sports

Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian recently lauded former tennis player, Andy Murray after a netizen on the social media platform X(formerly Twitter) replied to one of his tweets with an attachment of an old article of Murray’s interview from 2017.

Ohanian posted a tweet on Tuesday in which he asked people to imagine an alternate reality where “men didn’t feel threatened by the success of women’s sports. It’s not zero-sum, folks,” he stated. “What’s so interesting is that actual male athletes are generally hugely supportive of women athletes .It’s the keyboard jocks who furiously type angry tweets,” the 40-year-old added.

Agreeing with Ohanian’s statements, a user on X replied that they remembered Andy Murray correcting a journalist over their show of “casual sexism”. The user also attached a BBC article from July 2017 which talked about the instance. Impressed by Andy Murray’s decision to correct the interviewer when they stated the wrong facts, Ohanian replied to the user and hailed the tennis player for being “a real one!!”.

In a press conference during the Wimbledon in 2017, Murray corrected a journalist after they wrongly stated that Sam Querrey, who had knocked him out of Wimbledon, was “the first US player to reach a major semi-final since 2009”. The former World No.1 reminded the reporter the reporter that they were talking about the male players and that American Women were having a great run. Serena Willliams from America had won 12 Grand Slams by that time.

Alexis Ohanian urges more investment in women’s sport

After the commencement of the US Open, Alexis Ohanian shared a viewership statistic that was a bit out of the ordinary. The Women’s finals of the 2023 US Open had garnered more views than the Men’s finals. The 40-year-old shared a post on ‘X’ captioned, “Facts > Feelings US viewership of @USOpen finals: Coco Gauff vs Aryna Sabalenka: 3.422 million Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev: 2.321 million The free market speaks (again). Invest in Women’s Sports. @weareangelcity was just the start for me…”

Ohanian and his wife, tennis star Serena Williams have displayed a strong inclination towards investing in sports apart from tennis, particularly women’s sports. The pair recently bought the first golf team for TGL, a new league developed by golf greats, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. He is also the principal owner and founding investor of LA’s National Women’s Soccer League team, Angel City FC.
