Spaniard Paula Badosa is one of the most improved players on the WTA Tour since the start of the last season and her rankings are a testimony to that. Ranked 62nd in the world in April 2021, she is now the World No. 2 after putting in consistent performances across surfaces.

Badosa’s first title on the Tour came in May 2021 when she won the 2021 Serbia Open defeating Ana Konjuh in the finals. She then reached her second career final at the 2021 Indian Wells Open held in October due to a change in schedule because of the Pandemic. In Indian Wells, she was up against former champion and former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka but Badosa prevailed against the Grand Slam champion claiming her biggest career title.

The Indian Wells final between Vika and Paula is the longest final of the tournament and Badosa became the first Spanish woman to claim the title after a long 3-hour battle. Her consistent results saw her break into the Top-10 for the first time in November having made her WTA Finals debut as well.

Badosa claimed her third career title at the 2022 Sydney International defeating Barbora Krejcikova further cementing her place as one of the top-ranked players. Having started the year as the World No. 8, Paula is now the second-ranked player not only in the rankings but also in the race to qualify for the 2022 WTA Finals trailing Iga Swiatek in both the list.

“Never had a Monday felt so good. Happy for the road travelled and overcome. It has cost a lot but in the end, it was all worth it. Grateful to be living my dream. PS: I don’t usually put rankings but this one made me especially excited,” tweeted Paula sharing her happiness with her followers as well.

With the next event on the WTA calendar being the WTA-1000 Madrid Open 2022, Badosa is one of the title favourites and given it is her home event, she can expect extra support from the crowd. Badosa’s biggest challenge will be breaking Iga Swiatek‘s streak who has claimed 4 consecutive titles on the Tour and all three of the WTA-1000 events so far and the Pole is eyeing to make it 4 out of 4 at the Madrid Open.
