Allison Riske-Amritraj in a heated argument with the umpire

Tennis has the ability to bring in the raw emotions of the players out in the open. As lot is on the stake for the players, every point in the match and every win in the tournament counts. This can be especially said about Grand Slam tournaments. However, sometimes it can become ugly.

Similar scenes were seen at the first round of the Australian Open 2023 doubles match. Allison Riske-Amritraj and Linda Fruhvitova took the court against Alexandra Panova and Natela Dzalamidze. In the second set, Allison Riske-Amritraj made a decisive return to her opponent’s court, but it hit one of the players. She immediately apologised for it. However, the umpire gave the point to her opponents, interpreting that she disturbed her concentration in the middle of the game.

The rule suggests that a player cannot disturb his/her opponent when he or she is about to hit the ball. If such an incident happens then the point is immediately awarded to his or her opponent. However, this did not go down well with the Czech-American pair. They began to argue with the umpire and even abused him. Australian sports broadcaster Wide World of Sports shared an excerpt of the ugly banter between the players and the umpire.

Despite losing the first set, the doubles pair of Linda Fruhvitova and Alison Riske-Amritraj beat the pair of Alexandra Panova and Natela Dzalamidze 7(7)-6(4), 6-4, 7-5 and advanced into the second round of the tournament.

Arguments with the umpire

Serena Williams and Roger Federer arguing with the umpire

Arguments between players and umpires are not uncommon in tennis. Even tennis legends such as Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, etc,. have been seen arguing with the umpires.

Many times they are right in their arguments, and sometimes they are not. Hence, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred. It is their right to ask questions from the umpire if they think that the decision made is unfair. But that right needed to be exercised in a respectable manner. However, this time the incident blew up to epic proportions.

Tennis players can argue with the umpire, but not very often the players are seen abusing the umpire. Linda Fruhvitova and Alison Riske-Amritraj may have crossed the line this time. It has to be seen how the organizers of the Australian Open 2023 will look into this matter. Also, the ITF and WTA may also have to take cognizance of this incident.
