The amount of toll the mental part of a sport has on an athlete is often overlooked or hidden behind the physical strain. For years, players didn’t open up about this side of the sport they play. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they thought they would look like fools in front of the world. Often athletes would be termed chaotic and confused if they spoke about having difficulties coping with their mental health.

However, with time and more awareness spreading amongst the general public, professionals can speak their minds without worrying about how people would react. Tennis is not at all an exception to this mental fatigue phenomenon. Tennis players have often come out and expressed their battles with the mental side of the game. The most recent case of this is American 21-year-old Amanda Anisimova.

In her recent Instagram post she decided to make her feeling of being mentally fatigued, public. Her post read, “Hey guys, I thought I’d make a post explaining what’s been going on and my plans. I’ve really been struggling with my mental health and burnout since the summer of 2022, It’s become unbearable being at tennis tournaments. At this point my priority is my mental well-being and taking a break for some time. I’ve worked as hard as I could to push through it.” Anisimova isn’t the first mental health case and won’t be the last. Prior to her, Naomi Osaka, Barbora Krejcikova, Nick Kyrgios, to name a few who have taken a break from the sport to solve their struggles.

Being a tennis player, or, for that matter, any athlete, is not an easy task. Constant expectations and staying away from closed ones for long periods of a year can greatly impact your health. The tennis world is proud of Anisimova for voicing her troubles and is praying for the recovery of the American. The length of her break is indefinite, however, fans would hope to see their champ back in action as soon as possible.

In her Instagram post, Amanda Anisimova clearly said that she had been experiencing a burnout since the Summer of 2022. However, many would also believe that a string of poor performances in 2023 has played its part in the Americans taking a break from the sport. 2023 hasn’t been ideal at all for the Americans. With only a solitary win in 5 tournaments, it has been a below-average start for the 2019 French Open semi-finalist.

The only win that came her way this year was against the Russian Verz Zvonareva at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Apart from that she has suffered a first-round straight sets defeat at the Australian, Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid Open. The 2023 season may not entirely be the reason to take a break. However, it is undoubtedly a big part of the decision.
