American No.1 Jessica Pegula shares her excitement about returning in front of home crowds as she leads her nation at the San Diego Open

World No.6 Jessica Pegula spoke about the excitement of returning to the San Diego Open while addressing the crowd at the draw party along with World No.8 Coco Gauff.
“I’ve spent some time training at the Redondo Beach for a few years, so I’m familiar with the area and the support from you guys means a lot to me. I think being amongst some of the top American players, I like to show up for events like this and I appreciate your support. I love playing in California in this amazing weather and it means a lot to me,” said Pegula.
Jessica Pegula aims to end the year on a high note
Jessica Pegula is having a great year with a spot at the WTA Finals ensured. She is currently 3rd in the WTA race. Her singles record this season is 35-17 and reached the career-high ranking of 5 on September 12, 2022. Despite winning four doubles titles already in the season, she is yet to win a singles title this year and will be looking to win her first one here in front of the home crowd. She is teaming up with Coco Gauff for doubles as well here making it an all-American affair and box-office stuff.
28-year-old Jessica and 18-year-old Gauff are showing incredible improvement in their singles rankings since 2019. Both Americans were at 84 and 69 respectively in the 2019 year-end ranking. In 2020 they moved to 63 and 48 respectively, 18 and 22 in 2021 and now in 2022, both are inside the top ten. There are chances of both players finishing this year inside the top 5, which would be an incredible achievement for American Tennis.
The Southern California Open, currently known as The San Diego Open is part of the ATP Tour 250 series and a WTA 500 event on the 2022 WTA Tour. It was held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, United States, from September 19 through September 25, 2022, for the men where Brandon Nakashima def. Marcos Giron, 6–4, 6–4 in the final. For women, the tournament is going on from October 10 through October 16, 2022. This event in 2022 was the second edition for men ever and the first edition for women since 2015.
