World No. 59 Martina Trevisan becomes the first semi-finalist of the 2022 French Open after a scintillating win in the quarter-final against 17th seed Leylah Fernandez. Trevisan won the match 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-3 in 2 hours and 21 minutes. She had a match point at 5-4 in the second set but it took her 58 minutes after that point to qualify for the semi-finals as Leylah put in a great shift.

The once ace of the match belonged to Martina who made 7 double faults, won 7 of the 14 breakpoints on offer, hit 43 winners and made 29 unforced errors. Leylah from the other side of the net had 4 double faults, converted 4 of the 10 breakpoint opportunities, hit 29 winners and made 44 unforced errors as she struggled with her fitness as well during the length of the match.

Fernandez had injured herself and had her father Jorge, also her coach, requesting her to give a walkover but the 19-year old Canadian did not give up until the second match point that was won by the Italian player to qualify for her first-ever semi-finals in a Grand Slam event with her previous best being the quarter-finals run in the 2020 French Open.
