“An unforgettable time” Ahead of a possible drop to outside Top-50, Emma Raducanu looking for a good haul in the US Open leg

Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu entered the Top-10 for the first time when the WTA rankings were updated for the first time post the conclusion of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Emma, the current British No. 1 is now the World No. 10 owing to her brilliant title-winning run at the 2021 US Open. However, as the 2022 US Open approaches, things are getting tougher for an out-of-form Emma.

After a 4th round run in 2021 Wimbledon, Emma played on the lower tier of the WTA Tour in order to prepare for the US Open where she was ranked 150th and won the Grand Slam having started as a qualifier, a feat achieved by no singles player in the Open Era. With a massive boost of 2000 points, Emma entered the Top-25 of the rankings and since she was not dropping any points this season so far, things are about to change for the Brit.

With 2000 points to defend at the US Open, Emma will need to make a good run during the US Open leg series events which include the two WTA-1000 events in Cincinnati and Toronto. Emma resumes her hardcourt season at the 2022 Citi Open in Washington, a WTA-250 event. The next two weeks will see the events in Cincinnati and Toronto and the final week will again present a chance to play in one of the two WTA-250 events either in Granby or Cleveland before the 2022 US Open kicks off in New York on 29th August where Emma will be the defending champion.

“I’m thrilled that the Citi Open is bringing back its WTA tournament and I’m really excited to compete on the courts in DC for the first time. The past year has been an unforgettable time in my tennis career and I look forward to adding new memories in Washington this summer. I want to start my preparations on the hard courts. I think that Washington would be a great place to do that. Last year I played a lot of matches leading up…I just wanted to give myself a chance really.

“Going back to New York, it’s going to be cool because I have got a lot of experiences playing on big courts, playing with people in the stadium, playing with the spotlight on you. I don’t mind that. I mean, for me, everything is learning. I’m embracing every single moment that is thrown at me,” said Emma as reported by Eurosport. Raducanu‘s failure to defend a good number of points could see her leave the Top 50 and it will require great consistency from the teenager to rise in the rankings once again.
