Serena Williams and Ons Jabeur

Ons Jabeur and Serena Williams had teamed up for the 2022 Eastbourne International‘s Doubles event marking the return of the American to professional tennis after almost a year as her last appearance came during her first-round injury withdrawal from the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The injury kept her out until now increasing the speculations if it was the last of what the tennis fans saw of the 23-time major winner.

Serena however confirmed her plans to play at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships and as a warmup tournament, partnered with Jabeur, the current World No. 4 in singles. The duo started well picking a 3-set win in their first-round fixture and followed it with a straight-set win to enter the semi-finals but an untimely injury brings an end to the latest pairing of the Tour which had the fans hooked.

With their semi-final clash against Magda Linette and Aleksandra Krunic scheduled for Friday, 24th June, the disappointing news was confirmed in advance as Jabeur reportedly picked up an injury in her right knee. It can be assumed that the decision is a tactical one keeping in mind the 2022 Wimbledon which begins on Monday, 27th June.

Nevertheless, the good run by the two players comes to an unfortunate end as both will now head to London for their individual campaign at the Grand Slam with Serena looking for her 8th Wimbledon and 24th major title while Ons will chase her maiden Grand Slam title having reached the quarter-finals at the 2021 Wimbledon.
