Andre Agassi is a colorful individual with even colorful stories. One such story was of his father Emmanuel Agassi and his father-in-law Peter Graf, almost hand in fists, ready for a Knock Out Boxing Bout. What was the issue that led to this moment? Both proud parents of successful tennis players thought their kid-in-law would have done better in their careers had they imbibed one skill in each other.

Steffi Graf’s father, Peter Graf told Emmanuel that Andre would have won more if he learned her mean slice shot. In response, Emmanuel Agassi told Steffi Graf’s father that if Steffi had learned Agassi’s trademark two-handed backhand, she would have won 32 Grand-slam. That’s ten more Grand Slams than what the German World No. 1 actually won.

The discussion eventually led to both proud parents in front of each other and shadowboxing. Now Emmanuel’s reputation preceded him. He was the hot-tempered, violent man who usually knocked people unconscious. He was also a professional Boxer. Andre Agassi has recounted many incidents when his father would give a knock-out punch to anyone with whom he had had non-sensical debates.

Though Steffi Graf‘s father was the calmer one of the two, he was more excited at the moment. He even took his shirt off to intimidate Agassi’s father. That’s when Agassi had to throw himself in between the two, as he knew his father very well. And he knew he had the temper to react to a threat like that. Agassi recounted this hilarious incident in an interview.

In Andre Agassi’s book OPEN, he has spoken at length about his relationship with his father. How his father’s rigorous tennis training made him an expert player. But it also led to him disliking tennis a lot. Agassi also didn’t receive praises as much as he deserved from his father, which also affected Agassi’s mental well-being.

In the interview where Agassi recounted this incident, he spoke about his and his wife’s fathers influence on their lives. The most crucial difference was that Steffi Graf’s father didn’t push her to play tennis. In fact it was she who loved sports. Whereas for Andre Agassi, it was more his father’s ambition than his own. His father pushed him to excel in the sport right from childhood.

Agassi has also questioned whether the couple was robbed of their childhood to become tennis sensations. Agassi admits he was pushed off to a tennis academy in Florida at an early age. Going away from home at an early age sort of killed his childhood. He lost his friends and his mother’s protective nest very early in life. Whereas his wife, Steffi Graf, had a more rooted ecosystem at home itself.
