Tennis is always a treat to watch. Adding it to an iconic location makes it even more interesting. But it didn’t get more interesting than the 2005 clash between legends Andre Agassi and Roger Federer.
While the American was in his final few months on the court, the Swiss maestro was just beginning to write his legend. The two had shared an intense rivalry, and many were dubbing it the passing of the baton. Amid this, the two were made part of a unique match that’s not yet been repeated in almost two decades.
As the ATP Tour was working on its promotional activities to reach the maximum number of countries, Dubai was also one of the spots. And it became a historic event when Agassi and Federer agreed to their match at the Burj Al Arab.
The uniqueness came when their match was played on the helipad at the top of the tower, 690 feet above the ground. The round helipad had been converted into a tennis court with no boundaries or net. The two Grand Slam singles title winners played for 20 minutes in what was one of the most unique experiences of their lives.
The match was contested on February 22 as a promotional activity for the Dubai Championships, an event that’s now played on both the ATP and WTA Tours. Yesterday, the iconic contest completed 19 years and brought back memories for many fans.
Jumping on the bandwagon was Agassi and Steffi Graf‘s daughter, Jaz. While she was still a toddler when the match was contested, she shared the Instagram post of the US Open about the match on her Instagram story. While she did not add any captions, she used the slide where her father was seen in action hitting a forehand.
Roger Federer was left stunned by the impact of the match
The match became an instant hit and had everyone hooked. The tournament did get attention, serving the whole purpose of the extravagant promotion that took place. Currently, the tournament is an ATP-500 event while being a WTA-1000 event.
Agassi was at his witty best after the match while speaking about his experience of playing at the top.
This was an absolutely amazing experience. When you first get over how high you are and start playing, it’s an absolute joy and it was a great time. I had no issues with the height as long as I didn’t have to bungee jump off the side. The American had said back then.
Federer was however stunned by the reception and the impact that match had years later.
It was amazing. I didn’t know at the time that it was going to have such an impact. I had an idea of how we could make it better; we had a helicopter, which was going to film it all around, to really show what kind of a platform we were playing, instead of just having a picture taken of the hotel.Federer commented on the match a few years later.
It really shows how high up we are and I think that also made a difference. Ever since, everybody talks about it and I still hear stories about people saying, ‘OK, can we play tennis there?’. They are told: ‘we don’t have [a court]’, but they go: ‘No, no, I know you do’.Added the 20-time Grand Slam singles title winner.
While Agassi didn’t win a title in Dubai, Federer won it a record eight times, a feat that remains unmatched to date.
