The tennis tour is on its way to London as all gear for the elusive Wimbledon trophy. Apart from the all whites and strawberries and cream tradition, there is a new one in Wimbledon tennis. Novak Djokovic winning the trophy. He has won the last four editions and it would be courageous to bet against the Serb. He will be going for his 8th title in London. Former tennis player and current broadcaster Andrew Castle certainly believes that it will be incredibly tough to get past the Serb this time around too.

Djokovic is coming to London with great momentum behind him. He has had a rather queer season. With supremely high level performances in Grand Slam events and below par in the others, he has experienced quite a mix output this time around. However, looking at his perfect 2023 Grand Slam record, Castle has this to say to Express Sport in a recent interview. “I think somebody needs to serve him off-court and catch him by surprise because otherwise I’ve no idea how anybody can walk out on Center Court and think they’re going to beat Novak over five sets.

He continued, “They’re not going to beat him for conditioning. So they’ve got to whack him off-court.” Djokovic is the clear favorite for the Championship as per Castle. He clearly believes that the kind of form the Serb is in right now when it comes to the best of five sets, it’s almost impossible to surpass him.

Castle even touched on the fact that if anyone wants to beat him, it’s got to be that player whacking the Serb off and finishing the match very quickly. He has stated there is no way Djokovic is going to lose in a long match as his match fitness and conditioning is supreme.

Having said that, Castle knows it’s going to be a big task to beat Djokovic. The Brit also named a few potential competitors who might just manage to do it. “And looking at the ranking list, you’ve got people like Taylor Fritz, who’s a top 10 player. You know, Tiafoe has the court coverage to worry him for a set or two. Another American. So, you know, you look at the top 10 of the rankings, people like Daniil Medvedev, you know, back at Wimbledon next year, and you wonder to yourself… can he win on a grass court?

He continued, “Holger Rune, the Danish player, is somebody to watch whether he makes the transition to a grass court and is comfortable doing it. I still look at Tsitsipas as somebody that should do great on grass.”

Naming 5 players from the top 10 in the world is what Castle has come up with to beat Djokovic. However, he has doubted almost every player’s adaptive skills on grass. If all can get used to the skiddy low bounce, only then do they have a chance to surpass the World no. 1.
