Eighth seed, Andrey Rublev competed in the finals in the latest edition of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) against Bulgarian tennis star, Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday. Apart from the epic show of skills at their clash, what caught the attention of the fans and spectators was a shared sense of burgeoning bromance between the two players.
Grigor Dimitrov, who went by the name, ‘G-Unit’ and Andrey Rublev as the nickname, ‘Rublo’, starred in this weekend’s edition of the UTS Frankfurt and made it to the last round. Rublo dominated over his opponent at the beginning of the match with his strong forehand shots. However, Grigor made his comeback in the second quarter, winning it with a 12-17 score. Following a close clash, Rublo emerged victorious, with a score of 14-13, 12-17, 11-10, 17-16 over 4 quarters.
As amusing as their clash was the duo’s off-court bromance. “I like him a lot. I like him in the court and outside the court,” Dimitrov told a reporter during an interview mid-match. “I like you either way, man. He’s a great guy,” he added. Adding to the script, Rublev said, “I think, if I was a girl, I would be completely in love with Grigor…even being a man, I am in love with Grigor.”
Andrey Rublev won the title at the UTS Frankfurt with his debut at the tournament. Post-match the two players discussed their plans for the rest of the night.“We will finish with a romantic dinner today,” Rublev said. “With rose petals and candles,” the Bulgarian added.
Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov’s bromance
The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters event marked the beginning of the Russian seed, Andrey Rublev, and Grigor Dimitrov’s bromance. The duo traded their racket at the event for vintage sticks from the 1950s and the 1980s.
“The way he looks, the way he plays tennis, he can hit a backhand and miss in the net, but it’s so beautiful: amazing backhand, forehand, technique, touch. Whether it’s a winner or a miss, it always looks perfect,” Andrey had claimed at the event earlier.
Dimitrov ultimately came on top of the Russian, dominating the contest. Rublev sealed the friendly hit with a kiss at the net. The two players have been one of the closest friends of each other at the ATP Tour.
