At the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Sunday, Andrey Rublev defeated teenager Holger Rune and won his first ATP Masters 1000 title. A spectacular matchup between two of the ATP Tour’s top ballstrikers ended with Rublev winning 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 after two hours and 34 minutes of nonstop action.
The fifth-seeded Rublev came back 1-4 down in the third set to win his biggest championship. Despite having break points, the Russian was able to maintain composure and play outstanding tennis to win the match. Speaking after the match, Rublev was visibly emotional, saying “At least once for the first, because I remember the previous finals, mentally I was not ready. And when I was losing, I was thinking no chance to win anymore. And I was going mentally completely down.”
Rublev had previously lost in two Masters 1000 finals, against Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte-Carlo and Alexander Zverev in Cincinnati, in 2021. “If you’re gonna lose today, at least play till the end. While I was in the third set, I was hoping I’ll get one extra chance to come back or something. In the end I was able to do it,” he said.
Rublev’s triumph in Monte-Carlo marks a crucial turning point in his career and solidifies his standing as one of the ATP Tour’s top players in terms of talent. Rublev is certain to be a challenging opponent for any player he faces in the future because of his remarkable ball-striking skills and impressive mental toughness.
