The clash between Andrey Rublev and his opponent, Daniil Medvedev, coincided with the hottest day of the tournament yet. The two faced each other in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Saturday. The extreme heat and humidity made it harder for the two to focus on the match. Former Flushing Meadows champion Medvedev said, “A player is gonna die and they’re gonna see it,” while he was on a time-out.
The extreme heat and humidity in New York took a toll on the players on Wednesday. Medvedev, specifically, appeared to be struggling a lot. He called for the doctor on the court and had to take two medical timeouts. He was also seen using an inhaler mid-match. “At the end of the first set, I couldn’t see the ball anymore,” he claimed.
Andrey Rublev, however, had different views regarding the situation. When asked to comment on Medvedev’s comment about a player dying in such horrific conditions, Rublev said, “I’m not even thinking about my health. These moments I’m thinking I need to fight“. “You need to be ready for anything, ” he added.
Zverev further said that the best players are ‘the best’ because they prove that they’re ready. Citing the example of Novak Djokovic from the Serb’s match a day before, the Russian claimed, “Yesterday Novak played in the same conditions and nothing happened. He was able to win against a really good player“.
Cause for extreme heat during Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev’s clash

The extreme heat at Arthur Ashe Stadium this ongoing season of the US Open has taken a toll on several. Daniil Medvedev was seen struggling during his Round of 8 match as he called for an inhaler on the court on Wednesday. During his day session match at the stadium on Tuesday, Novak Djokovic also faced similar concerns, which he voiced later.
The Arthur Ashe Stadium is not fully ventilated with an air conditioner. Moreover, due to a new rule by tournament umpire, Jake Garner, the roofs of the stadium can only be closed when temperatures cross 86.2 F. Partially closed stadium relief only provides a slight relief to the spectators but not so much to the players.
