On Day 7 of the Wimbledon Championships, things were getting serious as players looked to book their names in the quarterfinals of the competition. And two such professionals, Andrey Rublev, and Alexander Bublik, gave the tennis fans one hell of a match, entertaining the crowd with their endless determination and shots. After nearly 5 hours of endless drama, it was the Russian who had the last laugh, glancing his way into the next stage by picking up a 7-5, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4 win.
However, the main insight of the match was when Rublev picked up a point from absolute nowhere and pulled one of the greatest shots ever seen in the competition.
The final set was tightly poised, with Rublev needing just two more points to win the match and the scores tied at 5 (40)-4 (15). Bublik put in every single effort left in his body into the shot, but the Russian superstar fell down on his knees to pull off an absolute belter of a return.
This left Bublik stranded as he held his head in disbelief, still trying to figure out how his opponent returned the ball back into his court, thereby getting closer to the match point. As expected, the clip of this impressive shot went viral in just a few seconds, and even the commentators gave Rublev the appreciation he deserves.
How has Andrey Rublev fared in the last couple of months?
Seeded seventh in the ongoing Wimbledon Championships, fans had a lot of hopes for Rublev but didn’t expect him to go this far in the tournament. There were a number of names coming up as favorites leading up to the competition, but Rublev did not receive the appreciation he deserved for what he has been doing for the past few months.
He has made it to the finals of four tournaments this year but ended up getting his hands on only one trophy, the Monte Carlo Masters, where he beat Holger Rune.
He also made it to the finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Srpska Open, and lastly, the Halle Open, which happened last month, losing to Medvedev, Lajovic, and Bublik, respectively. Rublev must be thrilled with this incredible win, but the main target for him should be the golden trophy.
