For a third time in his career as a tennis professional, Andrey Rublev has been chosen as one of the eight finalists for the year-ending ATP Finals. Prior to the opening round matches in Turin, the 26-year-old featured in a press conference along with compatriot and World No.3, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev.
The much-anticipated Nitto ATP Finals will kick start on Sunday in Italy’s Turin. With a schedule that spans over 8 days, the last tournament of the season features the best players this season. The finalists for the event include the top six men on the ATP rankings list, along with 2-times champion, Alexander Zverev and World No.10, Holger Rune.
In a recently held press conference, fifth seed Rublev was seen in a jolly spirit as the player struggled to find words mid-interview and left his comrades in splits. When the 26-year-old answered queries with his microphone turned off, Zverev turned it on as he sarcastically called the Russian ‘a genius’. Rublev then repeated the German’s words as he called himself a genius.
Rublev admitted to being ‘happy’ to make a return to the event. The player further left Daniil Medvedev at a loss for words when he called the 2021 US Open champion’s ‘beard’ a ‘barber’. The World No.3 looked confused before Zverev corrected the 26-year-old Russian. Rublev is set to face Medvedev in his first match at the Group stage round on Monday.
Andrey Rublev got called a ‘snake’ by Novak Djokovic, who compared himself to a ‘frog’
Following his semi-final round win over Andrey Rublev, Novak Djokovic drew parallels between his match against the Russian and a snake suffocating a frog. In an interview following his victory in the semi-finals, the Serbian ace praised his opponent’s form against him.
Rublev was suffocating me like a snake suffocates a frog for most of the match. He was playing at an extremely high level. I knew he possessed a great quality, but today he played off the charts. I don’t think I’ve ever faced Rublev this good.
Djokovic has beaten the 26-year-old in all their three meetings this year. The World No.1 has improved his head-to-head score against Rublev to 5-1. The two players might face each other in the next round of the ATP Finals if they qualify for the opening robin-round.
