World No 8 Andrey Rublev started his campaign at the 2022 ATP Finals registering a remarkable win against World No 5 Daniil Medvedev in the round-robin stage. He defeated his compatriot in two hours and 30 minutes playing some incredible level of tennis as it was quite a close encounter. He talked about defeating a former champion of the tournament and hilariously warned the other players of the Red Group.

It was Rublev’s third consecutive appearance at the Year-end Championship but he is yet to go past the group stage. With this win, he has edged his chances to book his place in the semifinals for the first time as he looks to end the year on a perfect note. He is one of the upcoming players of the sport and is yet to win a major title but has been a formidable opponent in the dominance era of the Big-3.

In the deadly Red Group, Stefanos Tsitsipas is the 2019 champion whereas Novak Djokovic is a 5-time champion and Andrey Rublev is the only one without a title win in Turin. The 25-year-old came out victorious against the 2020 ATP Finals champion despite missing seven set points in the first set of the match. During the post-match interview, he seemed pleased with his win over a former champion while he still has to face two more former champions and funnily issued a warning to them.

He had earlier questioned his presence among the former champions Group and with a big smile hinted that it would have been better for him in the Green Group. Andrey Rublev said that “I beat one former champion, it’s enough. I can go home now. It’s tough. I am in the worst group. I don’t know what I am doing there.
