Andrey Rublev had the best season of his career so far. The 26-year-old became the World No.5 in October, this year, a feat which he also achieved in 2021. Rublev went on to win his first ATP 1000 title in Monte Carlo this season.
Rublev also reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open in 2023. It is fair to say that the Russian player has a pretty good year performing constantly.
However, Rublev’s failures in the big matches of the tournaments, especially the Grand Slam events, have been criticized a lot by the tennis pundits. The current World No.5 has one of the worst records in the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam events losing his first eight quarterfinals of his career.
The Russian player made a fair introspect regarding his failure in big matches. Moreover, Rublev also stated the reasons for Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz being better than him.
In the interview, Rublev said,
They are better than me in the big moments, that's all I can say. You can find reasons why this is not the case, but the results show that on the big moments, these guys are just better than everyone else and those moments decide those big matches.Rublev via Tennis365
Will Andrey Rublev go big in the 2024 season?
There is no doubt that Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are an absolute beast in those big matches. The way they handle the pressure is what Rublev is referring to. Andrey Rublev lost twice to the Serbian in the quarter-finals.
Firstly, in the Australian Open where Nole won three straight sets to eliminate Rublev, and then in the Wimbledon where Rublev won the first set and then lost to Nole in straight three again.
When asked about his chances of winning the Grand Slam Rublev said,
Can I get to a Grand Slam final next year? If there is an option to sign for this right now, tell me where I need to write. Obviously, I wish for that. Let's see if it can happen. In the end, at the big moments, the other guys are better and that is what I need to improve. The aim is to improve all these weaknesses that I am still having on the court. There is so much I can still work on.
Rublev is one of the most talented young players of his generation. There are no questions regarding his skill. It is sure that he will get better with time. With the mega event starting in Melbourne Park next year, eyes will be on him to see how the young man performs.
