British tennis player Andy Murray bowed out to World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas in their second-round encounter at Wimbledon 2023. The two battled it out on the Centre Court for a total of 4 hours and 40 minutes, with the Greek eventually coming out on top.
Interestingly, the match was suspended when Murray was leading Tsitsipas 2 sets to 1. The Briton ended up losing both sets upon continuing play on Friday.
In the post-match conference, Tsitsipas praised Andy and admitted that he was lucky to secure a win against him. “It was a very difficult game and I’m impressed how well he holds up after his hip surgeries and his level today. I wish him the best in the future.” He revealed that the match was truly a ‘nerve-wracking’ experience for him.
During the presser, Murray was informed by a reporter that one of his returns of serve against the Greek at 4-4 in the fourth set was called out in spite of it being in. Murray knew exactly which point was being discussed here. Upon learning that he was unknowingly denied a point, that too, at such a crucial point of the match, the Briton lost his composure and broke down, admitting that he should have won the point.

Murray’s reaction to the news was quite apt. Had the point gone the way of the Briton, he would have had a shot at breaking Tsitsipas’ serve in the crucial 9th game. He could have then served out the set, and the match with it. The match could have ended in four sets, and more importantly, Andy would have progressed to the third round. “Yeah, well, I mean, that’s obviously frustrating ’cause I remember. I think it was like a backhand cross-court return, very short. I probably would have won the point. So yeah.”
Since the match finished, tennis pundits and fans alike have been denouncing the Wimbledon curfew, which affected this match like many others. Many people were of the opinion that Murray definitely lost momentum in his game following the curfew. They opined that he would have emerged victorious had the match been allowed to continue on Thursday.
Tsitsipas is set to face Serbian player Laslo Djere in the third round. Tsitsipas has now played 10 tiring sets in the past two matches while also focusing on his doubles tourney. It remains to be seen whether the Greek will be fit enough to give his best for the upcoming match-up.
