Former British tennis player, Tim Henman recently revealed that he believes Andy Murray has got what is required to beat Carlos Alcaraz if they were to clash in the Quarter-finals at the upcoming US Open 2023.
Murray’s former Davis Cup partner believes that the 36-year-old is excellent at making comebacks. Post his surgery, Andy Murray has managed to regain his movement. Henman predicts that the upcoming US Open might just be the perfect opportunity for Murray’s breakthrough.
Henman talked about how Murray lost in a close match to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round at Wimbledon earlier this year.“If he wins that Tsitsipas match at Wimbledon when he had the momentum, you could see him having a deep run there,” he said. “And I think what very much motivates him is to get into the second week of slams and see where it takes him.”
Tim Henman further said that he has been massively impressed by Murray’s comeback before as well. He stated that he couldn’t have predicted Andy’s path back from surgery and would have gotten it completely wrong. “But actually it’s kind of been the opposite. Now he has been able to build up that resilience and playing week in, week out without any issues with his hip. Now he’s ranked inside the top 40 and it’s not going to take much to move the needle,” he said.
Carlos Alcaraz readies himself for title defense
Current World No. 1 according to the ATP rankings, Carlos Alcaraz, will be looking forward to defending his title as last year’s US Open Champion. The Spaniard will be up against Germany’s Dominik Koepfer in the opening round of the tournament on Monday. Alcaraz will look forward to defending the US Open Title to become the first person to do it after Roger Federer had done it in 2008.
Alcaraz has been in exceptional form recently, and his matches this season suggest the same. He was the first player to win a Wimbledon title after 2003, aside from the Big 4, defeating 7-time Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic, to win the title in a series of 5 sets. Though he lost to Djokovic recently in the Finals at Cincinnati, the 20-year-old has everything that is required for him to defend his title.
Many are looking forward to seeing Alcaraz win the title once again, but he will be up against players who’ll give him a hard time. Becoming the Grand Slam champion once again this year won’t come easy.
