Tennis matches are not only about the player’s performance on the court but also the coach’s hard work off the court in helping strategize and improve their gameplay. The coach should be equally credited as the player. The player’s style of gameplay can show the coach’s touch on them. This press interview by Andy Murray is an example of that.

Former US Open winner and world number 1, Andy Murray, recently credited his ex-coach Brad Gilbert for Coco Gauff‘s win. He was asked about Brad’s involvement in the player’s game, and to this, Murray said that his ex-coach loves to strategize. He looks at the opponent’s weakness and then make the strategy around that. “She won, probably not playing her best. That was always something that Brad, I know he’s obviously written a book about it. But, yeah, his biggest thing was always just strategy.” said the former world champ.

The coach has a knack for finding his opponent’s weakness and then revolving the gameplay around that. Murray revealed that Gilbert had the ability to make the play win in any situation and that he also found ways to win even if the player was not at their best.

Andy Murray’s insights paint a clear image of his ex-coach, Brad Gilbert. Murray also said that Gilbert’s coaching style focuses more on strategy than on physical fitness, which he believes is more important for winning tennis matches.

In the first round, Coco Gauff was not at her best and was playing average tennis, but the way she could understand the opponent was the coach’s magic. “I’m sure he would have been happy with yesterday’s match because it was a tricky one against, like, an awkward opponent. She found a way to get through it. She’s got an opportunity to play better in the next one.”

It is clear how Gilbert’s strategies are the key to Gauff’s winning streak, and he should be given equal credit. Gauff’s victory over Siegemund showcased an understanding of her opponent backed by helpful strategies that got her over the line. Gauff will now face Miraa Andreeva in the second round of the US Open. Let’s see what strategies Gilbert has up his sleeves now.
