British Veteran Andy Murray talked about his plans to play in the clay swing this year at a press conference at the Qatar Open. With the insatiable desire to continue playing and fight till the end, Andy Murray had gone past the Italian World No.71 Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Qatar Open 2023. After saving three match points, Muray won 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Before facing the German World No.16 Alexander Zverev in the second round, Murray talked about his plans for the coming months, “My plan just now is to play in Rome and Madrid and hopefully the French Open, providing my body is good. You know, I’ll do a training block after Miami on the clay. I’m going to do that in Europe somewhere for a few weeks, three or four weeks. I’ll train, try and get my body used to the clay courts and to monitor how my body is feeling.”

Murray continued on his plans for the clay season, based on how good he feels physically. “If it feels good, I’ll play Rome, Madrid, and like I say, hopefully the French Open, because, yeah, the last — I don’t know how many times I have played it in the last five or six years, but when I have, like, I physically was not good the year I played against Wawrinka.”

I can’t remember too many other times I have played it in the last five or six years. So I’d like to get the opportunity to play it one more time before I stop playing. Whilst I feel physically really good, I would like to play there again.

Andy Murray

Andy Murray has yet again stunned the tennis world with his “never give up” attitude as he dispatched Italian World No.71 Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Qatar Open after saving three match points. The final score was 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Murray had to dig deep in the 10th game of the final set where he had to hold his serve at 4-5 (15-40). He had to save one more match point in the same game before closing out the match in the tie-breaker. As seen many times in the past, Murray was clinical during the crucial moments of the match. His tactical abilities helped in overcoming the younger opponent’s physical advantages.

Murray’s next-round opponent, Alexander Zverev ,got a bye in his first round. This will be the fifth encounter between them. Murray leads the head-to-head 3-1 but their last meeting was won by Zverev in straight sets. Zverev vs Murray will be an even contest although the Briton is high on confidence and Alexander Zverev is struggling to get back into rhythm. The odds are almost on par for this highly anticipated match in Qatar.
