British Former World No.1 Andy Murray has his say about Wimbledon’s decision to include Russian and Belarusian players this year despite the pressure from the Ukrainian players. According to the Briton, Wimbledon was not left with many options after it had banned Russians and Belarussians in 2022. All the other Grand Slams had never placed any restrictions on Russians and Belarussians.
As per Andy Murray’s words, “I knew kind of ahead of time that that was sort of how it was going. I think what’s really important is to continue to talk about what’s actually happening in Ukraine just now, not focusing on a few tennis players and a few athletes who may or may not be able to play major sporting events.”
Continuing the train of thought, Murray said, “It’s a difficult decision for Wimbledon, Obviously the rest of the sport had gone in a completely different direction to them, which made it very hard. But I don’t think this should be so much about that decision. I think it is distracting a little bit from actually what is taking place. You don’t want that to happen. You want the actual issue to be at the forefront of all of these discussions.” (Source: Tennis Majors)

Andy Murray will be looking to turn the clock back in Wimbledon

Though the Australian Open 2023 campaign of Andy Murray ended in the third round, his short run has created magical moments. The two epic five-setters against Matteo Berrettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis will be remembered forever. Roberto Bautista Agut was able to overcome the exhausted Briton in the third round in four sets, 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 4-6.
With the changed strategy of playing his natural shots after the hip injury comeback, the Briton is looking to be a contender for the top prize yet again. His endurance is still the same. He showed it at the Australian Open. The next Grand Slam, French Open, is not played on his natural favorite surface so Wimbledon is expected to be his go-to Grand Slam this year. Players who can play well on grass courts are relatively low, which also fuels the chances of the two-time Wimbledon champion.
The 35-year-old’s magical run in the Australian Open was least expected by the fans. Murray was able to prove his critics wrong with his marathon victories playing with a metal hip.
