The Big 4 dominated the tennis world from 2007 to 2017 in a fashion that many think will never happen again. A certain rivalry in that quartet was a subtle one but a highly intense one- Andy Murray versus Roger Federer.
Murray led the head-to-head for most past till Federer won the last 5 encounters to take a 14-11 lead. The Swiss has retired but the Scot is still playing and when asked whom he would take with him on dinner in a pre-match interview, Murray took Federer’s name.
Murray spoke in length about why he would want to take Federer. It also included the admission that their relationship at the start of the Scot’s career was different but it changed over time. Murray spoke about how he got closer to Federer at the Laver Cup when he got time to spend with the Swiss maestro. He also spoke about the great dinner he had with Federer, Bjorn Borg and Thomas Enqvist.
“I wouldn’t have said that when I was 25. We never practiced together. We weren’t close, never went for dinner or had lunches together. But I actually got the opportunity to have dinner with him at the Laver Cup (in London] last year. Roger, Bjorn Borg, Thomas Enqvist, and me — just the four of us. “It was brilliant. I spent a lot of time with Roger that week and we got on really, really well. At least I thought we did, he might be saying something completely different. Roger probably gets a lot of that – everyone thinking they’re his best friend.”
Can Andy Murray have a deep run at the Championships this time around?
Andy Murray may not be the same physical beast he was before his disastrous hip injury. However, the extremely skillful Scot still makes the young generation run for their money. He played a five-setter against Matteo Berettini in the first round at the Australian Open and then played almost 6 hours against Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round, winning both contests.
Backed that up with a run to the final in Doha. He also has three titles on the challenger tour with two coming on grass. In general, the 2023 season so far has been the best since his return to the tour. He would bank on the recent form to go deep in London. Murray starts his campaign against fellow Brit Ryan Penniston. His potential second-round clash would be Stefanos Tsitsipas. The draw will be tricky but his experience on the grass surface will give the Scot great confidence to do well against the best players.
