Andy Murray, who fell short in the first round of the Madrid Open, is gearing up to perform his best in the upcoming French Open. The 2-times Wimbledon champion will mark his first appearance at the Grand Slam since 2020.
The British player’s team is currently divided on the idea of him playing at the Parisian Clay. But, he feels the current state of his health and physique is quite suitable to take part in the tournament.
“Yeah, look, I would like to play, you know, just purely because, yeah, I don’t know if I’ll get another opportunity to play again. Whilst I feel fit and healthy, I would like to give it a go.”, he spoke at the press conference. Furthermore, Murray also expressed his desire to participate in the Wimbledon Championships while also hinting at a possible win. He last won the title in 2016 by defeating Miles Raonic.
“But yeah, I also have ambitions of, you know, competing for Wimbledon titles and that sort of stuff, and I know that sitting here today that probably doesn’t sound realistic, but I do believe that that’s a possibility. I obviously want to do the right thing.“, he further added.
The former World No.1 faced defeat in Monte Carlo Masters at the hands of A.D Minaur. He also exited from the first round of the Miami Open by the brilliant performance of Dusan Lajovic.
Andy Murray in 2023, the year of continued comebacks
Andy Murray is gearing up for his another Grand Slam appearance at the Roland Garros, followed by the Wimbledon Championships. The 52-seeded played the longest match of his career in the second round of the Australian Open. It was recorded 5 hours and 45 minutes but later failed to reach the fourth round as was exited by Roberto Bautista Agut.
The former Olympic champion was granted a wild card at the Qatar ATP 250 tour where he reached his first final of the year. But was defeated by Daniil Medvedev. He later withdrew from the Dubai Tennis Championships due to his recurring hip issues.
Murray’s early exit from the following tournaments of Indian Wells and Miami Open had critics questioning whether ‘will he be able to reach the former peak of success?’. His back-to-back disappointing performances and constant issues since the hip surgeries are becoming a cause of concern for fans all around the world.
