Andy Murray should have asked for Rafael Nadal’s birthday cake from 2013 French Open
What the world and Andy Murray had forgotten is that once the blue eyed boy of Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal was gifted even a much bigger cake than what Carlos Alcaraz did in Madrid. The King of Clay turned 27 on tour and was gifted a cake that was taller than the player himself. Had Twitteratis dug out the images from the archives of Roland Garros, the whole cake-gate incident between Sabalenka and Alcaraz would have been a different story altogether.
Some Twitter tennis fans felt that Andy Murray’s joke was a bit inappropriate, as the issue of the cake sizes was one of inequity between how men and women players are treated. The timing of the joke has again brought the issue of preferential treatment to the fore as the Italian Open is going on. The Italian Open prize money for women is half that of men. There is an ongoing controversy over the money distribution, which the tournament says will only be equalized by 2025.
