Former Wimbledon champion and home favorite Andy Murray gave it all on the Centre Court of Wimbledon in a packed stadium, cheering him up for every single point against an inspired Greek World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. But in the end, everything seemed infertile for the Briton veteran as Tsitsipas stepped up in the crucial moments like a phoenix to grab the match: 7-6(7-3), 6-7(2-7), 4-6, 7-6(7-3), 6-4.
Talking about the loss in the post-press-conference, Murray didn’t try to hide any of his emotions as he said, “I don’t know. Yeah, motivation is obviously a big thing. Continuing having early losses in tournaments like this don’t necessarily help with that. Yeah, it’s similar to I guess last year. I had a long think about things, spoke to my family, decided to keep on going.”
The three-time Grand Slam champion continued, “I don’t plan to stop right now. But, yeah, this one will take a little while to get over. Hopefully find the motivation again to keep training, keep pushing, try and keep getting better.”
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the first player since 2008 to beat 2 Grand Slam champions in the first two rounds of a slam
The Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas came to play on the second day of a suspended match against Andy Murray doing all the needed homework. As he played with the right intentions going for his shots and utilizing the physical advantage he has over the Briton fighter, the one-set deficit he had became irrelevant on the second day.
As he played some of his best tennis in recent months, Tsitsipas also got one unique record under his belt. Being able to glide through the shark-infected waters after back-to-back five-setters in the initial rounds, he became the first player to beat two former Grand Slam champions (In his case Dominic Thiem and Murray) in the first two rounds of a Grand Slam since 2008. The relief these intense battles will give him is going to be impeccable as he looks to steady the intensity in the third round against the unseeded Serbian Laslo Djere.
Tsitsipas has the right momentum to go deep this year in Wimbledon. If he can capitalize on his strengths and cover up the uncertainties over his single-handed backhand shots, the result might be unthinkable.
