Simon Chambers, the co-author of the book ‘The Rodger Federer Effect’, recently talked about Mark Petchey‘s interesting comments. Petchey, the former tennis player, and trainer, had said that his student Andy Murray tried to find reasons to dis-relish Roger Federer. Petchey gave the reason for the same and how it made it hard for others to beat him on the court.
Chambers in an interview with claytenis.com shared, “We also spoke to Mark Petchey, who was one of Andy Murray’s former trainers. Petchey said Murray tried to find a reason not to like Federer so he could beat him. Because Federer was so kind that everyone liked him- So, on the court it’s hard for you to beat him.”
Murray and Federer make two of the Big 4 of tennis, along with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, so it is indisputable that the two have definitely been in situations where they had to lock horns. According to Murray, it was easier to view Federer as a foe on the court if he could manage to find some reason to regard Federer with distaste.
When asked if the Brit did find any reason to dislike Federer, Chambers said, “He tried to make one up. And here there is a certain similarity with (Carlos) Alcaraz. Everyone likes him, everyone likes him, which gives him a kind of advantage when he’s up against his rivals,” establishing the similar situation with the Spaniard.
