On 8th March, through his Twitter account, Andy announced that he will donate the rest of the earnings from the season to the kids affected by the war in Ukraine. The father of four wrote on Twitter, “Over 7.5m children are at risk with the escalating conflict in Ukraine, so I’m working with @UNICEF–uk to help provide urgent medical supplies and early childhood development kits.”

When the former world no. 1 was asked about the Ukraine issue should be taken in a more renewed effort. He said, “Yeah I hope so. That’s one of the things that I think, yeah, UNICEF has been talking to my team about. It’s very difficult, yeah. It’s not the main story on the news every day like it was back then. You can’t just forget about this. It’s still going on.

“People are still getting killed, children are still having to flee their homes, and are in really, really tragic situations. Yeah, I think it’s important that the media continues to shine a light on it, and keep talking about it. Yeah, hopefully, like what the tournament is doing here can help a little bit with that,” added the Brit.

After getting inspired by Murray’s speech on the Ukraine issue, the director of Citi Open announced that the tournament will donate the amount which would be equal to Scot’s prize money. “All of us in the sport were inspired when Andy Murray said he would donate everything he earns from tournaments to UNICEF to help children in Ukraine. It got me thinking. We will match the prize money Andy will receive here and donate it. We will create a platform for fans to participate in called “Match Ukraine” where they can accompany Andy throughout the year,” said Mark Ein.
